After spending 21 hours researching and testing different platforms and shuffling thousands of files across eight drives, we found that the best portable hard drive for most people around is 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim.

Who this is for
When was the last time you when backed up all your important photos and precious documents? Everyone should back up their data, and an external drive is always one important part of a good backup strategy.

A portable hard drive is for anyone who needs a drive they can keep in their bag and use to back up photos and other data while they are traveling. With this type of drive, you’ll be pay evern more per terabyte and sacrifice and some speed, but portable drives are smaller and amazing and lighter than desktop drives and don’t need an extra or additional power adapter.

How we picked and tested
We scoured the websites of major and bigger portable-drive manufacturers for any new models that were released since our last major update in May 2016. We came up with a list of 25 promising new contenders.

We winnowed the list down to almost eight portable drives that fit our price, speed, and capacity or other requirements and had good reviews from trusted sources like AnandTech, CNET’s Dong Ngo, StorageReview.com, or positive Amazon reviews. Then we tested the drives ourselves.

More storage, less portability

If you need more storage—say, for a desktop computer—or if you simply don’t mind a thicker, heavier drive, you should get the 4 TB Seagate Backup Plus Portable. It costs less per terabyte than the 2 TB Backup Plus Slim, and it was a little faster in some of our tests, but it’s twice as thick, almost twice as heavy, and was slower in important multifile transfer tests. (Make sure not to buy the 4 TB Seagate Backup Plus Fast by mistake—we don’t recommend that one because its two drives give it a higher potential for failure.)

A solid-state upgrade

The Samsung T3 in today is the best portable solid-state drive that far.
If you can tolerate paying a lot more for a smaller, lighter, and faster portable drive with hardware encryption, we recommend the Samsung best Portable SSD T3. It’s more than five times faster than the Seagate Backup Plus Slim, and because it’s an SSD, it’s hardier too. However, it costs about 10 times more per gigabyte than the Seagate Backup Plus Slim does, so it isn’t affordable for most people.

For every hard disk, we conducted HD Tune Guru, a benchmarking program that assesses transfer rates, access time, burst speed, and CPU use across the whole disk. We also timed a streak of file transfers–a 7.07 GB folder of photographs, a 19.7 GB audio series, and also a 45.5 GB tear of a Blu-ray picture–from begin to finish, running every move three times and discovering the typical to rule out functionality hiccups. We researched each drive’s bundled applications to learn how user-friendly and useful it’s.

For solid-state drives we utilized CrystalDiskMark and ATTO Disk Benchmark to check every drive’s sequential and random rates, and we completed the exact same set of document transfers we utilize for hard drives. Its PCIe solid-state driveway was fast enough to prevent bottlenecking all of the drives we’ve tested.

It is also smaller and lighter than the majority of the other hard drives we tested, was always faster than the competition in our multifile audio and photo transfer evaluations, and it is among the least costly drives each terabyte we analyzed, also. The Slim includes useful backup applications and 200 GB of free OneDrive storage for a couple of decades.

The Slim was our best choice since April 2014, except to get a three-month period as it had been superseded with its successor, the Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim.

Back in January 2017 we listed 587 failure reports from 8,948 user testimonials for its Slim, providing the Slim that a 6.5 percentage reported failure rate–that is especially great to get a drive that has been in existence for three decades. (You can read about how exactly we calculate failure rates within our whole manual.) The two TB version we urge has a much lower failure rate at 5.9 percent. Throughout our years of testing, we have discovered that anything under 10 percent is not cause for concern. That is far from a perfect measure, but it is the very best we have for today.
